The Merry Wine Market: Black Mountain, NC

Today’s Asheville excursion turned into a trip to nearby Black Mountain, NC. I was easily swayed into visiting Black Mountain because my companion said, “There’s a wine shop near where we’re having lunch!” That wine shop was The Merry Wine Market, opened in 2004 by Scott and Katherine Gilreath Counce. According to the website, Katherine is the “brains” behind the business, having had formal wine training and chef experience that includes the Culinary Institute of America; Charlie Palmer’s Aureole (extern); Alain Passard’s Arpège in Paris (accepted); Georges Blanc in Vonnas, France; and Oggenfuss Comestibles in Zurich, Switzerland.

I wasn’t sure what to expect since Black Mountain is a small, historic town, population around 7900, but it turned out to be a delightful, full-service shop that carried local, national, and international wines at all price points; craft beers and ciders; and gifts. My companion and I purchased Prosecco and cider as gifts, and I purchased a bottle of 2009 Honig Vineyard & Winery Sauvignon Blanc for me.
