Riesling, with its thrilling balance of acidity, complexity of citrusy smells and flavours and ability to respond to vineyard character, is one of the world’s greatest varieties. ~ 01 August 2012 Anthony Barne, Living France (UK)

A month or so ago, I participated in a Finger Lakes Riesling #winechat and graciously received samples from the Finger Lakes Wine Alliance as part of the 2011 vintage launch. It was my first time tasting Riesling from the Finger Lakes. I participated in the chat with one of the samples, but took my time working through the others as I wanted to truly taste and enjoy them. Below are the samples I tasted and am ready to share with you. Because of this opportunity, I immediately planned a long weekend visit to the Finger Lakes that is forthcoming in a couple of weeks, to taste more Rieslings and other wines that the region has to offer.

2011 Thirsty Owl Dry Riesling

2011 Thirsty Owl Dry Riesling, $14.95 from the winery
A great introduction to Finger Lakes Riesling, bursting with apple, citrus, pineapple, good acidity, and minerality, very reflective of the terroir in which the grapes are grown.

2011 Anthony Road Dry Riesling

2011 Anthony Road Dry Riesling, $15.99 from the winery
A veritable fruit bowl in my mouth: grapefruit, lemon, melon, pineapple, and tangerine, with mouthwatering acidity and a bit of spice on the finish.

2011 Seneca Shore Amulet Dry Riesling

2011 Seneca Shore Amulet Dry Riesling, $14.99 from the winery
Aromas and flavors of green apple, as well as stone that showcases the rich, mineral soil of the Seneca Lake area.

2011 Lamoreaux Landing Dry Riesling

Another great bowl of liquid fruit and acidity, with aromas and flavors of apricot, green apple, peach, and lemon.
