2009 Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars Red Oak Vineyard Riesling, Finger Lakes, paired with shrimp and grits: Finger Lakes Wine Country meets South

This was a great contrasting flavor pairing that exceeded my expectations. The off-dry Riesling and its wonderful acidity cut through the spicy, buttery, creamy shrimp and grits perfectly. This tasting and accompanying photo was very popular on Facebook. A staff member at Lamoreaux Landing shared this on her page and one of her friends followed up later by letting us know she tried it as well and loved it. This might be one of my best pairings since I started learning about wine. I purchased this wine from Empire State Cellars for around $20.00 and prepared this pairing on February 8, 2013.

2011 Barn 85 (Truchard Vineyards) The Shepherd Sauvignon Blanc, Carneros

I purchased this wine as part of a birthday discount offered by Frank’s Wine in Wilmington, DE. I paid around $10.00. I was literally craving Sauvignon Blanc and it hit the spot on February 23, 2013. It had lovely aromas of tropical and citrus fruits and flavors of grapefruit and melon, just my style of Sauvignon Blanc.

On February 24, 2013, I enjoyed this wonderful wine for equality. Josh Stein had written about this wine’s development for my blog previously, but I had not yet tasted it. The wine was a lovely Bordeaux-style red blend that showed more like a Pinot Noir with regard to body. It was food friendly with approachable aromas and flavors of cherry and mint. The sample was graciously provided by Stein Family Wines. You can read about the cause here and purchase the wine here for $25.00.

2009 Calluna Vineyards Merlot Aux Raynaux

I  purchased this four-pack of wines for $162.26 (including shipping and tax) as part of 2013 Berserker Day and on February 26, 2013, I enjoyed the 2009 Calluna Vineyards Merlot Aux Raynaux (second bottle on the right) with steak and cheese pizza. I had tasted it twice before, at Vinoteca with winemaker David Jeffrey and and in September at Jeffrey’s estate, but a mere taste here and there doesn’t do this wine justice. It’s a Bordeaux-style Merlot, with lovely, but not over the top, blackcurrant and black cherry aromas and flavors, a silky mouthfeel, and a long finish. The 2010 will be released next month, just 75 cases made.
